The ISBN for the virtual clinical excursion is 978-0-323-05014-2. These are available as bundles in the bookstore and are also sold separately in the bookstore if you already have the text.

NUR 235 Orientation December 12, 2008

Please attend the orientation to NUR 235 on 12/12/08 at the High Tech Center at 10:00 am. Some students have said that they are unable to attend. The following information is the contents of the letter that will be given out that day. The students who attend will also recieve their schedule, preceptor site, and section number for class. The NUR 235 class begins Wednesday Jan 14, 2009. Your course instructors are Amy Putnam and Blake Rogers. If you are in section 1, then you will come from 0900-1200 to the Regional High Tech Center. If you are in section 2, then you will come from 1300-1600 to the Regional High Tech Center. Class will be conducted every Wednesday. Your lectures will be posted using the Camtasia technology on the HCC Blackboard website. Everybody will have clinical lab at on the following dates 1/15, 1/16 at the Student Center on HCC campus from 0900-1600. You will also have clinical lab on 1/22 and 1/23 at the Regional High Tech Center from 0900-1600. The clinical portion of the course is called the focused client care experience. This involves three experiences, which include clinical, preceptorship, and simulation. The clinical portion of the experience is six weeks in duration. If your clinical is scheduled at Mission Hospitals, then you will go on Thursday and Friday from 0630-1530. If your clinical is scheduled at Haywood Regional Medical Center, then you will go on Monday and Tuesday from 0630-1530. The dates are reflected in your individual schedules. The preceptorship is five weeks in duration. You are to complete 96 hours with your preceptor during that time. The dates of preceptorship that are listed on your schedules are the Sunday dates of each of the five weeks. During that time, you will work with your preceptor on his/her schedule. The facilities are aware that you cannot work Tuesday night or Wednesday day or night due to classes. Once the facilities get the preceptor name and contact information to us, we will distribute them to you. You are responsible for contacting your preceptor and setting up the schedule during your allotted five weeks. The dates of your preceptorship are reflected in your individual schedules. The simulation portion is two days in duration. The simulation is on Thursday and Friday, according to your schedule. The Thursday will be at the Haywood Campus from 0900-1900. The Friday will be spent completing your virtual clinical excursion at home. The dates of your simulation are reflected in your individual schedules.

Fall 2008 Reminders

FALL 2008--Reminder to current students:
Please update your CPR & PPD as well as any other immunizations as needed. There may be several opportunities to re-certify your CPR in mid-August on the SCC campus. Check with your advisors.
Also remember to purchase your Student Accident Policy and Malpractice Insurances when you pay your Fall tuition at your home campus. Your picture ID badge may also be expired, so check that out too, while you're there!

Pinning Info

Remember that pinning practice is at 10:30 on Monday July 28th at SCC, Balsam Building, Auditorium. Also, plan to arrive at 4:30 on the day of pinning (Aug. 1st). The photographer is coming at 5:15 for group pictures (free for downloading!). There is a large nursing classroom for you to use to dress and primp prior to the pictures. Please be on time!

NUR 185 Fall Meeting

Nur 185 will meet the first day of fall semester, Monday, Aug. 18th at 10:00 a.m. at the High Tech Center auditorium. BB will be available at 0800 so please print off your course documents prior to class (Syllabus, Clinical Course Document, clinical schedule, Objectives, course calender) and bring these to the class meeting along with your Virtual Clinical Excursion (VCE) software packet. NUR 125 Information

This announcement is to provide information and guidance regarding NUR 125 for this coming summer. There will be a comprehensive orientation session on May 22nd at 0900 at the Almond Center. Please plan on attending this session, as it is mandatory for the course. This course will be conducted in a Hybrid format with lectures being on-line through Blackboard and Labs being in person located at the Almond Center. Labs will be one day per week either on Tuesday or Wednesday, you will be told on May 22nd which day you have been assigned to lab. All course material will be covered during the first 6 weeks of the course with clinicals only the last 4 weeks. You must achieve at least an 78 in the theory portion to progress to clinicals. Please ensure that you have adequate internet access during the summer, as you will be downloading large files and be required to log onto the site multiple times per week. The text for the course is called Maternal Child Nursing with the author of Wong, 3rd edition. Please note that you will a bundle pack of the text and a CD of virtual clinical excursions. The ISBN for the bundle pack is 9780323031202, the cost will be $136.00. In addition to the text you will need to purchase the OB/Peds HESI, this will be available in your home campus bookstore and cost around $20. You may use grant money to pay for both of these items through your home bookstore. Before the session on May 22nd please read chapters 7-11 and 13-14 in your text as this material will be covered during this session. The instructors for this course are Deb Hogan (TCCC), Susan Fowler (TCCC), and Blake Rogers (HCC), please direct any questions that you feel cannot wait until May 22nd to them.

Summer Orientation

All first year students (alternates and day) will need to attend summer orientation at the High Tech Center this Thursday (May 1) from 1:00 -3:00. Nutrition and Mental Health will be covered. We do not expect for this orientation to last greater than one hour. You may stay behind and ask questions of Amy regarding Nutrition if you so desire. I will be going to the VA with 10 of the summer students by no later than 1:45; therefore, any further questions you may have, may be e-mailed to me or Amy. Donna Alexander

Meeting with the State Board of Nursing

I wanted to let all current students know that there will be a meeting with The State Board of Nursing on April 16th at 2:00 pm. This routine meeting will be held on the Haywood Campus in the main auditorium. All students should plan to attend the meeting which should last about an hour. Your instructors will work around your class times for this meeting, if necessary. Please attend this meeting and share your impressions of the Consortium with the Board Representatives. Nursing Pin Orders

We need to order the nursing pins now so that they will be here in time for both pinnings. All students need to order now if you would like a school pin. If you do want to order a pin, please go to the HCC bookstore and place an order. You be required to pay a down payment of $32.00 at time of order. The orders must be placed by 2/20/08, if you do not order by this date there will not be another chance for you to get a pin. You will then pay an additional $32.00 for the pin in May when it arrives. Keep your receipt. It is the proof that you need to claim your pin. If you order a pin and you are not successful in any of your courses, the bookstore will issue a refund when you present your receipt. Wendy

All NUR 255 and NUR 235 students please go to the following site and create a blackboard account regardless if you already have one or not. This needs to be done today. The quicker you do it, the quicker you will have access to blackboard for these two courses. For NUR 255, professional issues, there is an assignment posted. Since this class is 100% online, you will need to create your blackboard account today. For all Nursing students, please direct them to http://dl.haywood.edu/general/login/TCC_SCC.html If they follow the instructions on that page, we'll be able to create Blackboard accounts for them quite quickly.
